以降低光纤损耗为目的研究工作,正在材料和制造技术两个领域进行。现在批生产的光纤所用材料,主要是塑料、多成分玻璃及石英类等。采用这些材料都是为了谋求降低光纤损耗。材料的固有损耗按以上顺序排列,但是采用不同的制造技术也能有控制。作为远距离通信用光纤材料,使用玻璃类材料的可能性很大,因为多成分玻璃(除二氧化硅外,还包含Na、Ca、B等多种成分)的软化温度较低,具有很好的生产性。但是从坩埚中拉线时高纯度受到限制,达不到材料本身的低损耗。
