From 1963 to 1985, 539 cases of laryngeal cancer were treated in our hospital. Among them, there were 495 males (91.8%) and 44 females (8.2%). The male to female ratio was 11.3:1. After treatment, the 5-, 10-, and 15-year survival rates were 45.5%, 30.5%, and 23.5%, respectively. The 5-year and 10-year survival rates of the planned treatment group were 78.9% and 69.2%, respectively. More than 70% of deaths are local recurrences. This data shows that there are certain differences in the symptoms, lesion sites, 15-year survival rate, and distant metastasis rate among male and female laryngeal cancer cases. The article also discusses the gender ratio and the effects of smoking.
