以往测量单叶面积多采用方格法、重量法和求积仪法等等,由于不同植物、甚至于同一株植物其叶形变化都很大,所以上述各种方法都有操作烦琐或不能随机应变的不足。我们则是把形状不同的叶片,剪拼呈一个规则的方形,如长方形、正方形,再用数学公式速算。经对柞栎、蒿柳和几种绿肥植物就地取样实测,与方格法所测结果比较,误差仅在0.5平方厘米左右。剪拼时,要根据叶形确定不同的剪拼法: (1)条形叶采取分成若干等段的方法剪断,排列整齐(如谷子、蒿柳,图1); (2)披针状椭圆形叶采取平分主脉办法剪开,再把两半叶的叶尖和基部错对在一起,使两边呈直线,并将一半叶的基部或尖部剪补到另一半叶的基、尖部,呈长方形(图2);
