After 27 years of scientific research, the U.S. Department of Defense ended its scientific research program on food irradiation. The research work went to more than 50 million U.S. dollars. The process has been provided to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and it appears that they may do more with the program. Lieutenant Colonel Avalon Dung-an, coordinator of the Food and Nutrition Research Program at the Department of Defense, said he hopes the USDA can take the job because products like smoked pork can be processed with very little nitrite.
