“池塘生春草”这则逸事蕴含着晋宋齐三代诗风演变及谢氏家族诗学思想发展的重要信息。这个时期,诗风经历了两个阶段,先是以形似及辞藻雕琢革新玄言诗的缺乏形象与辞采,接着是追求景中蕴情和自然精美的更高诗歌审美理想。谢灵运对“池塘生春草”的激赏正处于第一阶段向第二阶段转变的过程,显示出他超越自身局限的努力,并为谢惠连、谢庄、谢朓等所继承发展,也可见谢氏家族自我革新的过程及其引领推动诗史发展的重要作用。
