The innovative shallow sub-sea anchor has been successfully applied in the early 1996 to the long-term mooring of a “job and crew accommodation vessel” at an oil and gas field developed by Congolese ELF in the Gulf of Guinea. The water depth of the Nkossa site is about 170 m, which is by far the deepest oil and gas field offshore West Africa. The site consists of normally consolidated soft clay and is typical of deep-water sites. In this paper, the design of the anchoring system is given, and the method of installing the negative pressure anchor pile by the decompression method is introduced. The performance of these negative pressure anchor piles during installation was evaluated, including the orientation and inclination at the bottom and the rate at which negative pressure was applied. The installation was very smooth and the measured penetration resistance was in good agreement with the expected value, confirming the reliability of the design installation method.
