Past history The Republic of Lebanon is a small country in the eastern Mediterranean. Its area is only 3400 square miles. The population is about 1.22 million (estimated in 1948). Its territory forms a long strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea. The length of the north from the Syrian border to the Israeli border is about 120 miles.
