Sweet potato seedling cultivation is expected to simplify the conventional planting procedure by transplanting stems. It is estimated that seedling cultivation can reduce the work-time by 40% in the growing season compared with the conventional method. Since the discovery of the natural flowering population under field conditions in Japan by Mao et al. (1966), some experiments and breeding work on seedling cultivation have been reported and established. However, in these experiments, the yield of seedling culture was found to be lower, at the very least as high as only 70% of the high-yielding conventional cultivar Koganesengan.
