产自河北丰宁四岔口盆地的原羽鸟是迄今所知最为原始的反鸟类化石,其产出岩段不含辽西义县组的标志性化石;该岩段所含的鱼类和鸟类化石显示了比义县组相关属种更原始的特征状态,且叶肢介化石为多见于冀北大北沟组和大店子组的属种.就地层发育序列而言,含原羽鸟的沉积岩段在相邻盆地伏于含义县组标志性化石的地层之下,因而确认原羽鸟的层位应低于辽西的义县组,大致相当于冀北的大店子组,这是目前国内鸟类化石与世界上反鸟类的最低产出层位.与原羽鸟相伴的还有其他鸟类、鲟形鱼类、有尾两栖动物和哺乳动物,据此新建丰宁北票鲟-丰宁原羽鸟脊椎动物组合,这一组合将热河生物群中脊椎动物的演变历史推进到130.7Ma前.建议以控制生物阶段性发展的大尺度构造沉积旋回来界定热河生物群,并以北票鲟替代狼鳍鱼作为热河生物群的代表化石.
