1 Communications Civilian telecommunications organizations have used fiber optics first, especially for long distance submarine communications lines. The military is not far behind, as the United States Navy plans to develop fixed distribution system (FDS) and air defense innovation (ADI) project. The FDS program is designed to complement the existing network of sonar surveillance systems. Both acoustic sensing and data transmission use fiber optics, which sense sound through a submarine lightwave monitoring system and transmit it to a coastal site for processing and evaluation with fine-mode fibers. The ADI, which is said to include an active transmitter, is used to detect submarine-launched ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
