清末民初,刘师培与陈独秀理性清算传统畸形人格,如鞭挞“清而不和”之徒和“雅人名士”逃避现实,“和而不清”之辈与同流合污者自甘堕落,国民爱国思想薄弱。同时,他们努力以学理构建近代理想人格,强调近代国民应具备积极入世、人格独立,自强不息、尚武善斗,秉持公理、道德优良,公私统一、家轻国重等品德。此外,还积极探索塑造人格之道,欲藉破“三纲之说”与老庄思想,融合中外文化,改造传统团体和加强修身与教育示范等途经以达到重塑近代理想人格之目的。
