This article describes the data processing and storage facilities for the British near-Earth orbit spacecraft that was launched in the last decade. The pulse frequency modulation system for ARIEL3 and ARIEL4 is described first and then the pulse code modulation system for Prospero, Miranda, ARIEL5 and ARIEL6 is described and is now the standard for all British spacecraft. This article also describes a toroidal loop tape recorder for data storage on a spacecraft and an improved version for future tasks. Then the article briefly describes the ARIEL5 core memory, and finally introduces the system’s future trends and ideas.
