进入改革开放的新时期，其“新”就新在以经济建设为中心，正是在这一历史条件下，经济统战工作愈是凸显出来。为了做好新时期经济统战工作，必须研究和把握三大基本原则：一是坚持可持续发展，立足统一战线长期的巩固和发展原则，注重长远发展或发展的质量，强调人口、资源、经济和社会的协调统一，把握可持续性、共同性和公平性。二是坚持创新，调动统一战线诸成员的自觉性和创造性原则，在实际工作中注意解决“转换创新模式”，形成新思路和开拓新领域；注意解决“价值取向的更新”，吸收中外文化的一切精华。三是坚持体现各方的利益，调动统一战线成员积极性原则，对各方的利益不能损害，只能兼顾。
