一代红铃虫为害无损失,可不防治。然而二代虫源来自一代花虫,故策略防治仍有必要。试验表明,现有的化学药剂起不到压缩发生基数、控制二代为害的作用,反而扰乱生态平衡;摘虫花能显著减少二代虫源、减轻二代以至三代的为害,但措施烦琐,难以实施。依据一代发生期棉田现蕾数与当年红铃虫为害的密切相关,分批摘去7月10日前的棉蕾,能把二代为害控制在经济损失水平以下,并有利于棉株优质高产。这一实例为今后化学去蕾提供了实际应用的依据。
