近年来,忠恕之道的现代价值开始引起人们的关注,但对忠恕之道的理解也出现了一些误解和歧义。大体而言,这些误解和歧异的出现主要是因为对忠恕之道的理解多停留于一般的道德法则和伦理规范的层面,而对忠恕之道的工夫论意涵注意不够。与作为一条静态的伦理法则和行为规范不同,忠恕之道作为一种实践工夫,它表现为一个不断实现自我转化和自我超越的动态过程。正是在这个过程中,人内在的真实性情得以呈现,并在真实性情的呈现中,自然展现出利益他人与社会的积极价值;同时,也正是在这个工夫历程中,消解掉了因自我偏执所可能导致的负面因素。因此可以说忠恕之道既是“积极”的,又不是“自我中心主义”的,从而构成了一种最佳的人我共处之道。这也表明,只有在工夫论的意义上并通过工夫实践,忠恕之道才能充分发挥其正面价值。
