“男降女不降”是晚清知识分子试图借助历史经验建构女性—国族话语的尝试。这种由隐性的“国民之母”和显在的“铁血英雌”所构成的话语脉络,显示出晚清女性—国族话语的冲突性本质。这一本质在此期战争题材小说中的女性形象上得以激显。她们身上传统女德对高拔扬厉的英杰女才的制服,体现了以“男降女不降”引导的女性—国族话语“去女性化”的本质:与民族国家密切关联的“铁血英雌”实际上仍然只是皇权(男权)的衍生物或变体。
“Male and female do not fall” is an attempt by the late Qing intellectuals trying to build women - national discourse with historical experience.
