从司马迁的《史记·游侠列传》到东晋干宝的《搜神记》再到南朝宋刘义庆的《世说新语》,侠文化的内涵不断深化丰富,始终不变的是男性豪侠在武侠文化中的绝对地位.直到唐代,女侠形象开始在武侠小说中占据一席之地.唐传奇中的女侠形象尤为突出,她们才貌双全,侠肝义胆,敢于直面社会和封建思想的压迫,为追求心中所爱而宁愿飞蛾扑火.这样的女侠形象不仅深化了中国“侠”的文化内涵,更在一定程度上提升了唐代女性的生活地位,其中表现的精神内涵成为后世女侠形象塑造的滥觞.
