Located between 42nd Street and 48th Street in Manhattan’s East Side, New York, United States, a matchbox-style building is home to the United Nations headquarters, the world’s largest international organization. Thousands of international civil servants from 145 countries are busy working day-to-day in the architecturally distinctive 39-story United Nations Secretariat building. The chief administrative officer who commands this huge body is the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Javier Perez de Cuellar, a gray-haired Peruvian originer, has been in this senior position for 10 years, making him an international figure known today in the world.
