In the 18th century, the cultural life in Europe experienced a drastic change. The shift from intensive reading to extensive reading and the rise of middle-class readers led to the printing industry’s explosion in the 18th century. In Britain, annual book production was estimated to have quadrupled in the 18th century. France also witnessed a marked increase in literacy rates and a surge in demand for modern secular literature.
