传统的机车车辆车轮踏面存在着通过曲线时容易引起轮缘与钢轨接触的缺点。其后开发的圆弧踏面虽然可以改善曲线通过性能,但由于中立点附近的锥度较大,因而直线走行稳定性较差:针对这些问题,日本东海容运铁路公司开发了一种在中立点附近雉度小,轮缘前沿锥度大,能与钢轨实现良好吻合的新圆弧踏面,经试验台试验、现车运行试验和耐久试验表明,这种踏面不但具有良好的曲线通过性能和直线运行稳定性,而且可以有效延长镟轮修整周期。
