杉木(Cunninghamia lanceolata Hook)为常绿针叶乔木,高可达30米,胸径2.5—3米,材质优良,生长迅速,树干通直,木材轻软,文理顺直,易于加工,有香气,含有防虫物质,无虫蛀,能耐腐,是建筑、桥梁、电杆、造船、桅杆、家俱等的优良用材,也可作造纸原料,针叶可提制芳香油,树皮可制纤维板和绝缘板,锯末可提制木素和葡萄糖等。1974、75两年,我们从贵州、湖南、广西、浙江引进杉木种子,在南五台山塔寺沟播种育苗后,定植180多株(现保存173株)。目前,生长健壮,最高的达4.3米,胸径7.5厘米,其中一株已结果。一、引种区的自然概况
