欣赏石的艺术爱好,可说是中国一门传统艺术。上溯唐宋,下及元明清至今,时有推陈出新,所具品质、形式、称谓,各异其趣。宋代伊始,爱好者们把具有峰峦或丘壑状貌之石块,截平底部,座于盆中观赏,称为“盆山”(见李仲明《营造法式》,以及杜绾《云林石谱》)。明代计成的《园冶》有“盆景”之称,这类款式是以石料为主,放置浅型水盆中观赏。清末以降,人们又把陶铸细小人物或亭台楼阁,或舟楫、走兽等摆件在石山上适可处配置一、二,起到艺术烘托和深化意境的作用。其后,各地对这一类赏石艺术称谓不同,全国没有统一名称。

Since then, different places have different names for this category of rock art, and there is no uniform name in the country.
