对于最近的戏剧舞台演出的各种剧目,听到一些议论,有的说:“当前上海舞台竞演传统剧目,几乎有压倒一切之势,这不能不引起我们的注意,这种倾向不能说是健康的。我们应该大力提倡演现代戏。”大力编演现代戏,这个倡议完全正确。但现代戏的剧目很少,个别的现代戏不受观众欢迎,却不能怪到传统剧目头上,或埋怨说是由于传统剧太多,受了传统剧排挤的原故。传统剧和表现现代题材的剧应该是百花齐放,各展所长,相互辉映,并非倾轧和互争雄长的关系。上面那种议论的出发点首先就错了,错就错在不应把传统剧和现代剧对立起来。

The starting point for that kind of argument above is the wrong one at first, and the mistake is that the traditional and modern dramas should not be antagonized.
