Mobilization of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells(CFU-GM)from hematopoietic tissue into circulation after intravenous injection ofChromobacterium violaceum endotoxin(Ed)was studied in mice.A singleinjection of 25μg of endotoxin appeared to produce about 2-fold increase in CFU-GM per 10~5 mononuclear cells(MNC).That elevation of CFU-GM/10~5 MNC afterendotoxin coincided with a decrease in the counts of CFU-GM in bone marrow. The effect was greater when higher doses of endotoxin were injected. The spleenseemed to be acting not as a source adding progenitor cells to the blood, but on thecontrary as an organ capturing the CFU-GM from the blood.Adrenalectomizedmice did not show the increase of CFU-GM in the peripheral blood followingendotoxin administration, suggesting that mobilization of CFU-GM is probablymediated by adrenal or adrenal cortical hormones.
