汽油之折光指數,在其中所合芳香族化合物除去之前,較除去之後爲高。所有前人测定其芳香族含量之方法,均利用此一原則。用硫酸脫除芳香族化合物,而量其折光指數即其一例。然此類方法皆甚複雜。著者之方法,亦利用同一原則,惟其改進之點,在利用普通容易測定之物理性質,即:(a)用鈉D克在20℃测量之折光指數,(b)在20℃之密度,(c)中間沸點,(d)溴價。應用著者之方法於前人之實驗數據之計算結果,其平均差誤爲—0.8,而其最大之差額爲—3。著者方法之應用限度爲所用汽油之沸點不得超過200℃。
