新疆地处我国西部地区,面积辽阔,有166万平方公里的国土面积,占中国国土总面积六分之一强;地形复杂,正如一个“疆”字,左侧代表新疆5600多公里长的陆地边境线,右侧表示新疆的地理格局,三横代表北部的阿尔泰山脉,中间的天山山脉和南部的昆仑山脉,两个田字代表北部的准噶尔盆地和南部的塔里木盆地,分别位于三大山脉之间.由于新疆位于亚欧大陆腹地,周围的高山阻隔了来自西风环流和来自印度洋的暖湿气流,造成新疆的千旱和半干旱气候,形成了大规模的沙漠和戈壁.
