Nippon Paper announced that they were the first successful researchers in the world to develop genetically modified rice that is effective in treating diabetes. If carried out smoothly, it is planned that by the year 2006, such genetically modified rice will be commercialized. This genetically engineered rice, developed jointly by Nippon Paper Industries, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Institute of Biological Resources and Sanwa Chemical Institute, recently submitted a safety certification to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare
