Objective To understand the difference of bird flu detection process between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Office International Des Epizooties (OIE), so as to learn from each other so as to establish a more complete testing process. Methods The main focus of this study was to compare the preliminary positive, suspicious and negative sample handling procedures for bird flu RT-PCR testing recommended by the WHO and OIE, and to provide a corroborating proof of reporting procedure to explore and improve the scientific testing model. Results In order to prevent false-negative results, WHO’s further testing of human influenza virus was needed in order to prevent false-positive results. In order to prevent false-positives, it is necessary to carry out sequencing and confirmation. In order to prevent false-negative results during the bird flu detection in OIE, Sampling confirmation, in order to prevent false positives, but also with the virus isolation and culture results comprehensive conclusion. Conclusion Both WHO and OIE testing procedures can effectively prevent false negatives and false positives. However, other subtypes of the bird flu need to be complemented and perfected.
