最初进行椰子杂交育种时,椰干产量很低,因此改良这一性状是唯一的目的。目前考虑到质量标准,即椰油含量,蛋白质含量和成分;进一步则要考虑椰子植区的多种经营引起的适应生态条件和抗病虫害问题。产量改良所沿用的选种方法,其基础是探究原种和单株间的配合力,以及对可遗传性状进行表型选择,包括三个方面:即一、有希望种与引进种;二、原种和品种之间的配合能力;三、单株配合力。
