百年基业历史贡献开滦煤矿历史悠久,名声显赫,中国历史上第一条自办铁路——唐胥铁路——便是由开平矿务局开办的,而开平矿务局则是开滦集团的前身。同时开滦煤矿也是中国最早使用机器开采的大型煤矿,是中国近代最早实行股份制经营的企业,除自办了中国第一条铁路,还制造出了中国第一台蒸汽机车——龙号机车、生产出了中国第一桶水泥——麒麟牌水泥、建造了中国第一个煤炭码头——秦皇岛港。不仅如此开滦煤矿还成立了中国企业最早的自营海运船队。因煤而兴的开滦,名副其实地成为了“中国煤炭工业源头”、“北方民族工业的摇篮”。
