The world semiconductor market statistics (WSTS) published by the world’s 31 semiconductor manufacturing companies in the end of May announced that the world’s semiconductor sales in 1998 had decreased by 8.4% compared with the previous year, and this year’s semiconductor sales will resume 12.6% increase in the past 4 years. For the first time in the middle of the year, it increased by two digits. The report also predicts that the world semiconductor market demand will continue to increase after 2000. The demand of the world’s semiconductor market has continued to slump due to the sharp decline in semiconductor chip prices since 1996, and recently the demand for computers, mobile phones, and digital home appliances has rapidly increased as a driving force, and the demand for semiconductors in the world has shown signs of recovery. The WSTS predicts that the world semiconductor market will have sales of 141.4 billion U.S. dollars this year, an increase of 12.6% over the previous year.
