During the twenties and thirties, when interpreting the nature of the “avant-garde” art, people liked to quote what Binnie Nicholson’s children had said, or what she said. When people asked her how to paint, she said: “I first think, and then draw a line around my thoughts.” At that time, the remark was a fabled remark, but today it appears that there are far more questions raised than it can solve, and in particular how to shift the vision onto the canvas. How do you think it? Where does the line start and where does it end? What kind of line is this?
