In this paper, Ding Ling’s short story “Night” is placed under the historical background of the formation of Marxism theory and the theory of new democratic revolution in the early 40’s. Combining with Ding Ling’s own experience in studying at Yanan Marx and Lenin School, It explores the practical problems confronting the people in the border areas during the process of the Chinese revolution breaking the economic and ethical order of the original society and transforming the new-type production and social relations in the new-democratic society. Through the application of the political and economic terms of “material foundation”, Ding Ling focused on the contradiction between the most important material foundation of the border areas in the 1940s and the development of the superstructure. Ding Ling noticed the difficulties encountered in the actual implementation of the party’s policies and paid attention to the tension between the life on the border area and the revolutionary theory. “Night” reflects the thinking and response of writer and party member cadres Ding Ling on major theoretical issues during this period.
