《社会契约论》集中反映了当时资产阶级上升时期的民主思想,被后世奉为推翻君主专制和建立民主政治的理论武器。这本书针对封建制度的等级特权,提出了争取自由的战斗口号,要求建立资产阶级民主共和国。其民主的口号振奋人心,意义深远,即使在生产力飞速发展、民主更广泛的今天看来,该书还是有着十分强烈的现实意义,不愧被称作世界思想史上的重要古典文献之一。
