2008年,注定是中国历史上一个特殊的年份,奥运会将在北京召开。与此同时,2008年,对于中国乒乓球科研人员也是一个特殊的年份,这是因为,1988年在中国乒乓球队备战第24届奥运会的科技服务中,吴焕群先生等前辈创立的“三段评估理论”也已经为中国乒乓球的科研发展服务了整整20年的时间。在这20年中,“三段评估理论”不断发展创新,已成为国家乒乓球队科研服务的重要工具之一。从2005年开始,笔者随张瑛秋教授在国家女二队做科研服务,几年跟队下来,根据实际情况不断改进三段统计法。其中,有一个比较棘手的问题就是:有些时候,教练员们需要在训练(比赛)的过程中或者训练(比赛)结束后马上知道双方选手的三段统计结果,进而据此进行临场指导,但是由于科研人员人数有限不能抽出足够
