乒乓球运动员需要的特征主要是具有追求正确目标需要的迫切性,追求物质需要多样甚至高档、精神文化需要优先性,创造成就需要的强烈性及自尊荣誉需要的关切性。教练员在管理队员时,必须具备相应的素质,根据乒乓球运动员需要的多样性、层次性和发展性的特点,克服重视从思想出发、忽视从需要出发的唯心论观点,正确处理乒乓球运动员个人需要和社会需要的辨证关系,有意识地培养乒乓球运动员的意志、志向和性格,把乒乓球运动员培养成为符合社会需求的复合型人才。
