U.S.A. (U.S. Patent No. 4,591,482) has been awarded to Gorham International Inc. of Maine, USA for a new process for powder metal processing known as Pressure Assisted Sintering (PAS). The process is said to produce fully dense powder metallurgy at a cost below the sintering or sintering + hot isostatic pressing process. The use of isostatics far below the pressures required for hot isostatic pressing allows for the complete densification of many alloys, with mechanical properties superior to forgings, castings and machined parts. The PAS process is more than a simple low pressure hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process. It is in the PALS process at the correct time and temperature under the appropriate pressure for sintering, to produce completely dense powder metallurgy.
