黄道周刚正不阿,一生极重名节,颇有“生当作人杰,死亦为鬼雄”的壮志。崇祯十七年(1644),崇祯帝朱由检自尽,明朝灭亡。1645年9月19日,罢归乡里的黄道周募众数千人,马仅十余匹,带一月军粮,出仙霞关,与清兵抗击。这个显然不堪一击的出征,连黄道周的继室夫人蔡玉卿都看出来了,她感叹道:“道周死得其所矣!”黄道周果然毫无悬念地兵败受伤被俘,押解至南京。清廷敬重黄道周博学忠义,派先前已降清的洪承畴劝降,黄道周对洪十分鄙视,作对联讥刺之:
