奥登在中国不算名微。他三十年代到过中国,并以此经历写过一本《战争之旅》(Journey to War)。中国的诗人和学者卞之琳曾译过他的一些诗篇,虽然数量不多,但堪称佳作佳译,对中国当时的新诗运动起过作用。奥登也被写入美国文学史中,所以也有人称他为美国诗人。这正跟艾略特(T.S.Eliot)和庞德(E.Pound)差不多,也有人常常为他们的国别打官司。实际情况是艾略特、庞德是美国人移居英国,而奥登则是英国人移居
