There seems to be a consensus among Americans that if they do not do volunteer work, they will not be respected by society. In this atmosphere, American students have formed a kind of cognition: If you don’t volunteer, you don’t want to apply for a good university, and it’s even harder to enter elite schools. American volunteer activities are started with children. Primary school children mainly use some simple housework and service work, including helping parents wipe their cars, cutting lawns for neighbors, sending newspapers in the community, and looking after cats and dogs for friends. U.S. China Association organizes students for the society and engages in various types of volunteer activities, such as going to major hospitals, medical school laboratories, community service agencies, Red Cross, libraries, and museums.
