位于层峦叠嶂南疆山脉的中国林科院大青山热带林业实验中心,驻守着广西边防某部二连哨所的5名官兵。他们长年累月在这里站岗、执勤、巡逻、训练,与成百上千只锦鸡和睦相处,成了锦鸡的“保护神”。 锦鸡是国家二级保护动物,为避免误伤锦鸡,让锦鸡有一个宁静的生存环境,哨所曾三易靶场,移到两公里以外的凹地。战士们用饲料合上米饭,让锦鸡自由地觅食。他们还利用节假日走上街头,到旅游点宣传《野生动物保护法》,并与当地派出所、实验中心联合成立了巡逻小组,4年来官兵们阻止不法分子捕杀锦鸡近百次,救活锦鸡182只,抓获不法分子53名。
