水稻是含硅量最多的植物之一.一般在茎叶中含硅量达10—20%,所以被称为典型需硅作物.硅是水稻所需氮、磷、钾三要素之后第四位大量营养元素.施用硅肥能促进水稻生长健壮,增强抗倒伏力;有利于抵抗和减轻稻瘟病、纹枯病及稻螟虫等各种病虫为害;可以抑制叶片水分蒸腾,在缺水条件下,有抗旱作用;能促进水稻机体新陈代谢,增强根系活力,可以防止后期早衰,促进早熟(4—5天),增加穗粒数和粒重.据1988年全省10个市18个县(区)45个点统计,施用硅肥的稻田平均每亩增产64.4公斤,提高13.8%,在严重缺硅地块增产30%以上.
