Recently, an extension to the standard Ethernet network protocol implemented by Alteon gained strong support from Microsoft and Compaq, both of whom agreed on their data distribution format. Dubbed Jumbo Frames, the technology was originally designed to provide Ethernet users with rapidly changing packets, an important technology for connecting PCs and servers on the local area network. This technology allows computers to control large chunks of data for better performance from server systems. Compaq and Digital’s approval has facilitated this expansion agreement within the industry. Compaq warrants OEM gigabit Alteon NICs in server systems and Microsoft will begin building a software driver for Jumbo Frames in the Windows NT operating system.
