协议是决定如何控制数据流和如何纠正可能存在的错误。使用个人计算机和主机或其它个人计算机进行通讯的用户已完全认识到他们必须使用“异步终端”仿真软件(EMULAtion Software)才能实现通讯。什么是异步终端?它与其它类型的终端有何区别?终端的主要区别就通讯而言在于所使用的通讯协议。在辞典中对“协议”的定义是“约定各个计算机或终端之间相互作用的言论和行为的正式标准”。协议的目的是要确定谁应该在什么时候说话以及他说的话是什么意思?
