Confucian theory on the teaching of poetry “to know more about the name of the birds and animals,” the claim is only limited to the “name” to explain, completely obliterated the poetic connotation. This paper argues that the real meaning of “knowing the names of birds, beasts, plants and animals” should be the enrichment and diversification of knowledge, knowledge and understanding from the names of animals and plants in the poem. This is because, as determined by the thinking characteristics of poetic discourse, the appearances of things referred to in the name of the beasts and animals in the poem as the existence and symbolic noumenon of the objects have been directed from the limited poetic meaning to infinity, reflecting the profound meaning of the life of the universe. This sentence of Confucius not only points out the poetic function of the names of the beasts and animals in the poem, but also instructs the students to learn the meaning of the poem according to the characteristics of the poem.
