Time: 2003 Region: Latin America Country: Cuba Category: Performing Arts This cheerful art of dancing and drumming, known as French drum music, represents the longest and most visible connection to the culture of Haiti in Africa in the Province of Oriente, Cuba. This music is the result of the fusion of traditional French dance of the 18th century and the music of the Dahomey region of West Africa. Rioting took place in Haiti in the 1890s, and the slaves in Haiti were transported to eastern Cuba, where they also brought drums to Cuba. The first written records of this cultural tradition were found in early 19th-century coffee farms not far from San Diego and Guantanamo. After the abolition of slavery in Cuba in 1886, the liberated slaves ran to the town to look for work. In this way, some French drumming groups were formed in several towns and cities in the eastern part of Cuba.
