The global semiconductor market retreat in 2001 did not affect the vigorous development of China’s integrated circuit industry. Taiwan and foreign companies’ investment in mainland ICs is still increasing, and new production lines are under construction. The “National IC Industry Working Conference” held in Shanghai on September 17-18 specified the direction for the development of China’s integrated circuit industry. The State Council [2000] document No. 18 and local policies to encourage the development of integrated circuits have paved the way for the arrival of the integrated circuit industry in China. On September 25, 2001, an 8-inch wafer known as “the first core of SMIC” was put into trial production at SMIC’s IC Manufacturing Co., Ltd. This means that the manufacturing level of China’s integrated circuits is about to reach a span of 8 inches and 0.25 microns, and it also indicates that China’s chip manufacturing technology is about to enter the international mainstream level. The first integrated circuit company established by SMIC after the issuance of the 18th document has once again become the focus of attention of the world. The reporter interviewed SMIC spokesperson Dr. Xie Zhifeng on this festive day.
