The U.S. Air Force proposed a phased improvement plan for the AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) Boeing E-3 aircraft. After the plan is completed, it is expected that the AWACS system will be able to detect smaller targets and deal with stronger interference. The Air Systems Command’s Electronic Systems Division plans to conclude a contract with Boeing, the first phase to improve the U.S. military’s 24 E-3Bs and 10 E-3Cs. The contract came into operation in 1986. The contract may also include the U.S. and NATO countries working together to improve 18 NATO-standard E-3A aircraft. The last NATO E-3 aircraft was delivered in early 1985. According to Winter, the airborne early warning and control system for the US electronics division, plans are made to improve detection capabilities, interference immunity and secure communications primarily because of increased Soviet interference and changes in target speed, size and number.
