19世纪八九十年代之后,为了实现其实业救国的理想,张謇提出了著名的“棉铁主义”主张。积极引进现代农业发展理念,推动棉花种植面积的扩大和棉种的改良,促进植棉业的发展是张謇践行其“棉铁主义”主张的重要举措。张謇推进植棉业发展的措施对我国经济社会产生了深远的影响,我国棉花种植面积从此有了巨大扩展,棉花品质也有了大幅度提高。植棉业的发展不仅促进了我国棉纺织业的发展,而且棉花生产的扩张对我国农村社会经济也产生了很大的影响。
