Objective To study the relationship between dietary protein intake and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference under different conditions. Methods We collected dietary survey and physique data from adult residents of 12 provinces in China in the “CHNS” project in 2011. Stratified by sex, quantile regression was used to analyze the relationship between dietary protein intake and BMI and waist circumference. Results The subjects were 11 800 adults aged 18 and over, including 5623 (47.7%) adult men, with an average age of (51.5 ± 15.1) years and adult women of 6177 (52.3%) with an average age of (51.9 ± 15.0 ) Dietary protein intakes of male, female and male were (1.1 ± 0.4) and (1.0 ± 0.4) g / kg BW, respectively. There were significant differences in waist circumference, energy intake, protein intake, carbohydrate intake, activity level, education level, smoking status, drinking status and work status between men and women (P <0.05) Fat intake and urban rural proportion of male and female differences were not statistically significant. Regression analysis of quantile after adjusting for confounding factors by sex stratification showed that the regression coefficients of dietary protein intake under the condition of different percentiles of percentiles BMI and waist circumference were all statistically significant (P <0.05) Regression coefficient parallelism test P <0.05. Conclusions Dietary protein intake has a negative correlation with BMI and waist circumference under different conditions and shows a trend of trend, which has a greater impact on protein intake of high BMI and high waist circumference people.
